Okay so– if Yellow Diamonds “team” is perhaps meant to reflect similar to Rose Quartz (Pearl - Peridot, Amethyst - Jasper), I think I have a theory on where Lapis slots in. It’s clear current Lapis doesnt want to help/join Yellow Diamond, but there’s also at first distrust in the crystal gems.
So what if, Lapis WAS part of Yellow Diamond team, but not as just Lapis lazuli, but as a fusion. She’s the the similar to Garnet. She was a fusion, but perhaps an ill mix, again being the opposite to Ruby and Sapphires relationship. The reason for her damaged gem might have come from an act of betrayal from her fusion partner when they un-fused. The mirror entrapment too may have also been a result. I think seeing Lapis Lazuli is known for encouraging strong will– her possible fusion partner will be something along the lines of physical strength.
It could be the reason why she reacted like she did with Jasper as well when they fused and took control, not just because of Jasper– but it was a reminder of her previous fusion and partner.
